Strategies for Post-Disaster Community Engagement Workshop
Free and open to the public
Friday, March 29, 2019 | 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. CDT
Nebraska History Museum
Gilmore Room, 131 Centennial Mall N
Register by calling Kelli Bacon at 402-471-4766 or email kelli.bacon@nebraska.gov
Cultural heritage professionals from across the state are invited for a dialog on strategies for post-disaster community engagement Friday, March 29 from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. CST at History Nebraska, Gilmore Room, 131 Centennial Mall N.When homes are damaged and lives are upended, treasured keepsakes such as artwork, photos, personal papers, and other family heirlooms become more cherished. Even in the aftermath of a disaster, these treasures may be salvageable.
Cultural institutions can provide important information to communities to preserve their possessions as they regain access to their homes and businesses. The Smithsonian Institution will provide a short briefing about its Saving Your Family Treasures program, then representatives from other Nebraska institutions are invited to share any programs currently under way and discuss strategies for working together.
Experts will demonstrate how to handle, dry, and clean damaged objects and share tips on personal safety, setting priorities, and other preservation options. There will be a formal presentation followed by a question and answer period.
The workshop will have examples of common personal heirlooms on display to demonstrate salvaging techniques. Due to safety concerns, please do not bring your damaged objects to the workshop. If you have specific questions about your personal heirlooms, feel free to bring images of each item to discuss with the preservation experts directly.

From the Society of American Archivist: The National Disaster Relief Fund for Archives committee is saddened to learn of the severe flooding in the Midwest. As those affected by the damage begin to evaluate their collections and construct their recovery plans, the committee would like to remind our colleagues that funds are available.
An institution does not need to be a member of SAA to apply. Funding covers services such as freeze drying, storage, transportation of materials, and rental facilities; supplies, including acid-free boxes and folders, storage cartons, cleaning materials, plastic milk crates, and protective gear; and to defray the costs for volunteers or other laborers who assist with the recovery. Grants up to $5,000 are available. The committee reviews each application as soon as possible and makes every attempt to evaluate applications quickly. Our goal is to ensure that approved applicants receive their requested funds soon after the application is submitted so that they can be put to use immediately.

To apply to the NDRFA, please see our webpage for additional information. Perspective applicatns can also directly visit the application. Please share this information with any colleagues or institutions you feel may need it and to other lists. The NDRFA also gratefully accepts donations to the fund.

If anyone has questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

chair, NDRFA

Bonnie,

Nebraska's Museum Property Act can be used to resolve issues of old loans or property where you do not have documentation of a clear transfer of title. See http://nebraskalegislature.gov/laws/browse-chapters.php?chapter=51 and look at lines 51-701 through 51-712.

Sincerely,

I have been having questions and this answers some of them.
Another questions that I have:
What happens if you have an items(s) that have been here so long and no family members (that we know about) aren't available to contact. Is their a NEbraska Law or whatever?
Thanks for the above.
Bonnie
Your institution does an excellent job.
